Labuan, Malaysia

My family made a trip to KK, Sabah last week, and my father decided that we take a trip to Labuan. It took us 3 hours by ferry from Jeselton port to Labuan port, wasn't the most comfortable journey as the seas were quite rough.

At the port we rented a car, and took a drive around town, where we stumbled across kampung patau- patau, a village of wooden houses built on stilts. I would say that this is one of the cleanest water village that I've been to. The waters run clear, filled with sea creatures, houses with porches that are clean and kempt. Walking along, we saw a family of fisherman cleaning their fishing gear and mak ciks cleaning up seafood that were brought home for dinner.

Whenever I visit a city or a country, I always made it a point to visit the local market to see the different produce and ingredients. The market was divided to dry and wet goods section. Fresh and dried seafood is dirt cheap in Labuan, and there are plenty of variety and choices. Buy your seafood, and bring it to a restaurant of your choice to enjoy your meal. That night, we went to Island garden.

Chocolate, alcohol, perfume and smokes are also very cheap in Labuan because of it's duty free status.

For breakfast, my father's friend took us to this coffee shop that serves up good fish head noodle. Heng Heng coffee shop can be found along the row of shops opposite the Labuan Port. The noodle is served dry. The fish was so fresh and moist. The chill served together delivers a nice tang and heat that heightens the taste of the noodles. They also serve amazing homemade fish balls.
