Char Kuey Kak + Chee Cheong Fun @ Lorong Macalister
On the second morning of my stay in Penang, we headed on to the famous chee cheong fun and char kuey kak at lorong macalister
The stall selling the Char Kuey Kak
Char Kuey Kak - What i love about the char kuey kak is the heap load of crunchy bean sprouts in contrast with soft kuey oak and it is perfumed with egg, choi bo (preserved vegetable) and the flavor imparted by the wok (AKA wok hei).
Har Ko Chee Cheong Fun - I was skeptical when i first heard that in Penang, Chee Cheong fun is served with har ko thinking how on earth is it gonna be delicious. But after this trying the CCF at Lorong macalister, i was then hooked. I really appreciate Aunty's extra effort of unrolling half the CCF which allowed the open side to take up the sauce and the unrolled part to provide texture. The toasted sesame seeds added a slight textural contrast to the soft CCF and the layering of flavor in the sauce was amazing with the initial sweetness of the sweet sauce and the piquant taste of hae ko then the slight heat from the chili.
